Includes photographs depicting views of Folsom Prison taken at the turn of the twentieth century, evidently following the
construction of many new facilities at the prison. Also includes several views of the California State Prison at San Quentin.
Views depict prison grounds, building interiors, group portraits of prisoners and prison officials, and various recreation
activities of the prisoners. Includes image of an alleged Harry Houdini performance at San Quentin. Also includes one photograph
of Sing Sing prison (New York) and one photomechanical print of the Massachusetts Reformatory Prison for Woman (Sherborn).
Also includes 2 souvenir cabinet cards featuring photocollages of Ohio death row convicts. Also includes image of an executed
prisoner in an electric chair. Also includes two unopened packages of plug tobacco and a pair of salt and pepper shakers produced
by inmates at San Quentin. 2014 additions include several hundred postcards depicting various prisons throughout the united
states; two jigsaw puzzles depicting Sing Sing prison; movie stills from various prison-themed motion pictures; photographic
prints depicting miscellaneous subjects, including Alger Hiss, Eastern Penitentiary, Oakdale Reformatory for Women, Nevada
State Prison, Somerset County Jail, Illinois State Penitentiary, Fort Warren, Fort Leavenworth, New Jersey State Prison and
McNeill Island Federal Penitentiary; and a calendar illustrated with views of Kansas State Penitentiary.
